Our Community – Arthur Chawner

Arthur Chawner has been associated with Aid for the Blind for 45 of it’s 47 years. He was born and raised in Brisbane and currently resides on the Sunshine Coast.

He was President of the Association (1998-2002), and is currently Vice President. Arthur has been a very successful collector for AFB for those 45 years, and also volunteers his time to represent the Association on various committees.

He is also a reseller of The Big Issue and for over 20 years worked for an automotive component manufacturer making brake components.

Arthur describes his condition as Thrombosis Anaridia of the Iris, and has been totally blind since he was 16. He was introduced to the Association through his father who was then the Secretary.

Arthur has an Advanced Diploma in Christian Works, majoring in Counselling, and a Certificate 2 and 3 in IT. He is looking forward to continuing his studies in Management in the near future.

Arthur’s great loves are Music, Swish, IT, and of course his faithful (and drop dead gorgeous) Guide Dog, Keeley.

He is very proud to be a Life Member of Aid for the Blind Queensland. In his words, he “believes strongly in the mission, values and principles of Aid for the Blind”. He has a burning desire for Independence despite having no vision, and Aid for the Blind has assisted greatly with this, and added meaning to his life.
