Our Community – Richard Attwater

Richard Attwater was born in Epsom Surrey, England.

The son of a publican, he lived in several placed in England, including Surrey, Wimbledon, Paddington and various other locations as he was growing up.

Richard was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) at age 16, and currently has around 5% sight, recently losing his colour vision.

Before leaving England and emigrating to Australia in 2005, Richard obtained a Diploma in Business / Finance / Admin, and is currently working towards a qualification in Volunteer Management.

Richard is employed as the Co-ordinator of Volunteers QLD / NT for Vision Australia, a position he has held for the past 9 years. He is very proud of the fact that despite his low vision, he has been able to establish a meaningful life in a new country, including a terrific job, and at the same time gaining his own independence which is important to him.

In his spare time Richard loves playing guitar, enjoys cooking, and of course the special time he spends with his beautiful Guide Dog Jada. He has also been active in water and jet skiing in the past, obviously enjoying life in the fast lane. He also describes himself as an avid Chelsea fan.

If that is not enough, Richard recently competed in the Australian “Swish” championships in Melbourne.

Richard was referred to Aid for the Blind over 2 years ago when he had an urgent need of accommodation

He says Aid for the Blind was a real life-saver for him when he was urgently in need of accommodation. He says “the staff are approachable and are very trusting. Any and all issues are attended to in a professional and timely manner”.
